A number of Aboriginal groups made quilled items of birchbark, but it is an art form that seems to have been pioneered by the Mi'kmaq, and their marvellous traditional geometric designs are unique. Quillwork on bark developed after 1700 and was a highly valued commodity. Although I found this in Ontario the exquisite geometric pattern looks like Mi'kmaq quill work on the top. There are some broken quills, one on the top and on the side but overall excellent condition for its vintage age.
